MARCH , 2006
Regarding guests visiting our club:
This past AGM we received a motion from the floor asking to limit members’ guests to a maximum of two visits per month. The reasoning behind the motion was that beyond two visits per month, the guest should apply to join the MBSC, perhaps as a SOCIAL member.
Although we should encourage and welcome prospective new members, we should be careful how we seduce those visitors to become paying members.
- This motion implies a restriction to a member’s activity. A FULL or DINGHY member, who enjoys inviting a friend out for a sail every Saturday afternoon, would need to find a new friend for two of the Saturdays each month. Hang on now; our FULL or DINGHY member owns his boat and pays for his slip and membership, and is told who they can have on board for an afternoon sail??
- Racing crews would be the most affected by this motion. A large number of boats that race in our club races have crew that are not members. No kidding! Members generally own boats, and do not crew; they skipper, and therefore need crew. Telling your crew that they will have to join the club in order to help you race, may not have the desired result.
- Check out the MBSC Constitution under “objects”.
“To establish, maintain and conduct a sailing club and to promote among the Members of the Club and others an interest in recreational and competitive sailing; and
To provide premises and facilities for Members and guests of the Club and to equip, furnish and maintain the same;…”
- My final point is about our relationship with the Town of Midland. If we owned the land, we could consider getting a snooty attitude, and limit guests, but of course that would never happen - -right? We are on leased property with the Town of Midland’s blessing due to our Sailing School and due to our mandate to promote sailing. Let’s not rankle our landlord.
Over the years we have seen some guests become FULL members, and bring their own boats into the harbour. Guests become members when they are ready, and sometimes it is due to some gentle nudging by the friends they sail with.
Looking forward to the summer ahead, John Bishop, Commodore
- I was able to contact most of the 2005 adult sailing school students re: membership & the CAL 20. One of them expressed an interest in our CAL 20.
- I would like to suggest we designate someone to look after the sale of the CAL 20 for work hours (advertise & show it). I would like to know if it has sails and what equipment it has if any.
- Have several new applications for membership. Two A & B dock appropriate boats. I will be contacting someone to help interview these two perspective members.
- I have been able to send out MBSC information sheets and membership applications electronically with great success.
- Provided Commodore Bishop with list of members who have not responded by sending in their request for services information (thanks to Yvette).
- Looking forward to the final list of empty slips to fill.
Len Mitchell, Vice Commodore
