Parent and Sailor Information Kit

Welcome to a Midland Bay Sailing School fun summer! The Midland Bay Sailing Club programs emphasize fun, safety, education and social development while implementing the core values of honesty, respect, caring and responsibility. Our staff are carefully selected and trained to ensure their ability to role model these values for your child.

Don't Forget
Please ensure that your child is sent to sailing school every day with the following labeled items:

Lifejacket
Canadian Coast Guard Approved and correctly sized for your child. There are some jackets that are nicely proportioned for sailing - shorter from waist to neck - ask your sales clerk. Suppliers we know of are: West Marine, Midland, Canadian Tire, Midland, Fogh Marine, Toronto. or any good marine store.
Hat
Tilly style, or baseball style are good. Make sure you add a light string with a clip to connect hat to lifejacket - hats do blow off.
Sunscreen (nut free, check labels)
Lunch (nut free)
Water bottle
Snacks
Suitable clothing for weather conditions.
Bathing suit and towel (in a plastic bag)
Closed toe, soft soled shoes.
Light colour soled running shoes (they will get wet) are good. (Black soled shoes mark the boats). No sandals.
Backpack or Bag
Each child's belonging should arrive in a bag or backpack that can fit in a 16" x 24" laundry basket.

Sailing School Hours
The program runs from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Parents can drop off their young sailors between 8:50 and 9:00 a.m., and pick them up between 4:00 and 4:10 p.m.

When you enter the sailing club, take the right fork of the road and drop off your young sailors near the parking area just passed the main clubhouse. The 'Dinghy Shed' is the main headquarters of the Sailing School. Washrooms are located in the main building. Please use the washrooms designated for the Sailing School and help keep them clean and tidy.

Morning "Meet and Greet" upon arrival.
Your child's safety is a primary concern throughout the day. As parents and sailors arrive on site by car, by foot, by bicycle or by boat, they will be greeted by one of our instructors. Please use this opportunity to talk to the instructor and indicate any concerns or special needs for your child that day.

Valuables at Sailing School

The Sailing School Staff has planned a fun and dynamic program to ensure your sailor has a positive experience. Please do not send your child with any valuables such as money, Walkmans, MP3 players, gameboys, radios, cell phone, toys and jewelry, unless a special item has been requested for a 'theme' day.

Sun Sense
We are committed to the safety of all children. We will do the following for your child:

All staff will act as role models, using sunscreen and wearing hats.

We ask that you educate your child on the necessity to wear sunscreen and a hat.

Medications
Please send all your child's medications to sailing school in their original containers. Clearly label all medications with sailor's name and dosage. Include a sheet of instructions with the medications if dose and/or frequency of medication requires clarification. If you are sending more than one medication, please put it in a labeled plastic baggy with each container separately labeled.

Absenteeism
At the beginning of the day, after morning muster and attendance, all students who are away will be contacted. If you know that your child will be missing from sailing school for whatever reason, please call the Midland Parks and Recreation department in the morning, or inform us the first day of sailing school. If you will be dropping your child off late, please inform us in advance. To prevent spreading of colds and illnesses, please keep your child home if they are sick.

Communication
Your child's sailing school instructor will be phoning you at home the weekend before the sailing session. Creating a contact with your child's counsellor will help you have a positive and comfortable experience. Please feel free to ask any questions that you may have regarding the sailing school program.

Photographs
Any photograph taken of your child while at sailing school will become the property of the Midland Bay Sailing Club, and may be used for various promotional purposes. If you wish otherwise, please inform the school management in writing.

Supervision
All staff are chosen for their commitment to safety and the well-being of each young sailor. An intensive pre-season training program introduces and educates staff regarding their important role in making your child's sailing experience a success. Part of this training includes sessions on group dynamics and Healthy Child Development. In addition, all staff hold Standard First Aid, CPR, Boat Safety and CYA instructor certification.

Program Expulsion
Intentional participant behaviour that puts the young sailor or others at physical or emotional risk may result in immediate dismissal from the program. Any expenses incurred as a result of program dismissal will be the responsibility of the participant/parent/guardian. No refund will be given to students leaving sailing school prior to the end of the session due to disciplinary action.
